The Body Speaks Even When the Mouth Lies

"Hay mentiras en los labios. Hay mentiras en la piel."

In English, we usually imagine a lie as something spoken. A false sentence. A hidden fact.

But Mexican songs often seem more suspicious of the body.

A kiss can lie. A smile can lie. A touch can promise something the heart has already withdrawn.

Mexico has made me pay more attention to what is communicated without words.

A glance across a room. The warmth of a greeting. The distance inside an embrace. The sudden absence of affection.

People reveal themselves through presence as much as speech.

Perhaps this is why Mexican communication can feel so emotionally rich. Meaning is not carried only by vocabulary. It lives in tone, gesture, timing and touch.

The lips may say one thing. The skin may say another.

And often, the skin tells the truth first.
