An Open Letter to Mexico

Dear Mexico,

I came here because I wanted to learn your language.

I thought I was coming to collect vocabulary.

Instead, you rewrote mine.

I arrived with dictionaries, flashcards, grammar rules, and all the confidence of someone who believed language lived inside words.

You patiently showed me that it lives inside people.

You taught me that ahorita isn't a time.

That órale can mean almost anything.

That mande isn't submission. It's respect.

That provecho isn't just something you say before a meal. It's a wish that someone enjoys a moment of their life.

You taught me that every phrase carries history.

Every joke carries family.

Every conversation carries warmth.

And every taco stand somehow becomes a classroom.

I've made thousands of mistakes.

I've confused words.

I've butchered pronunciation.

I've accidentally said things I still hope people have forgotten.

And every single time...

Someone smiled.

Someone corrected me.

Someone encouraged me.

Someone said,

"No pasa nada."

Nothing happens.

We'll help you.

Keep going.

That generosity is impossible to measure.

To the Mexican fans around the world...

I've never seen anything quite like you.

Win or lose, you're already singing.

Before kickoff, you're singing.

After heartbreak, you're singing.

Thousands of strangers become one voice.

One rhythm.

One family.

You don't wait for victory to celebrate.

You celebrate because you're together.

That's a lesson much bigger than football.

I've stood among you in stadiums.

I've heard Cielito Lindo echo through the night.

I've watched people who had never met hug like lifelong friends after a goal.

I've watched children, grandparents, workers, students, rich, poor, everyone wearing the same green shirt.

For ninety minutes...

Nothing else mattered.

Why I talk about Mexican Spanish

People often ask me why I spend so much time talking about Mexican Spanish.

The answer has never really been about Spanish.

It's about Mexico.

Language is simply the doorway.

On the other side is a culture built on resilience.

Humor.

Hospitality.

Family.

Loyalty.

And an ability to find joy, even when life gives you every reason not to.

I've lived in many countries.

I've spoken many languages.

Each one has taught me something.

But Mexico taught me that the fastest way into someone's heart isn't perfect grammar.

It's genuine curiosity.

Thank you

So thank you.

Thank you for your patience.

Thank you for laughing with me instead of at me.

Thank you for every conversation in cafés, markets, taxis, barber shops, taquerías, buses, OXXOs, and tiny family restaurants.

Thank you for letting a South African become a small part of your story.

I started this journey trying to sound more Mexican.

I never expected to feel more at home.

And to every Mexican carrying your flag somewhere else in the world...

Never underestimate what you've given the rest of us.

You've shown millions of people that identity isn't something you explain.

It's something you sing.

It's something you cook.

It's something you protect.

It's something you welcome others into.

So wherever this World Cup takes us...

Wherever football takes us...

Know this.

There are people like me who came looking for a language...

...and ended up falling in love with an entire country.

Con muchísimo cariño,

David
